Nature Climate Change Perspective, 'Taking climate model evaluation to the next level', by Veronika Eyring and others discusses newly developed tools that improve the evaluation of climate models. Advancement in this area is critical for providing the most credible information possible to stakeholders and policy-makers.

Extremes NatureA collection of articles on Climate and Weather Extremes was recently published in Nature to coincide with the opening of the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting 2018. The Collection, which highlights research looking at extreme events across the globe and their prediction, is an outcome of the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) Prediction Project Extremes Workshop that was held at International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University in December 2016 (Workshop website).

You can access the collection of papers on the Nature website.

The WCRP and Future Earth sponsored Global Carbon Project has published its Carbon Budget 2018 where it estimates that CO2 emissions will rise by a projected 2.7 percent this year, with an uncertainty range between 1.8 percent and 3.7 percent. In 2017, carbon emissions grew by 1.6 percent after a three-year hiatus. The budget was published today in Earth System Science Data and has clear implications for discussions at the Katowice Climate Change Conference.

Is there a connection between climate change and wildfires? Kevin Trenberth, Senior Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, explains that "Global warming does not cause wildfires ... global warming exacerbates the conditions and raises the risk of wildfire." To find out how this relates to the Earth's energy imbalance, click the headline above.

IPCC SR15 current and stabilized projected warmingThe IPCC today announced the approval of the "Summary for Policymakers" of its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C. The full report will soon be released in final form, pending small changes that arose from the consideration of the Summary for Policymakers. For details, click the headline above.

WMO Chief Scientist and Research Director, Pavel Kabat, is currently at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meeting to consider its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 ºC. He specifically mentions the role of WCRP in convening the global research community, both to advance our understanding of fundamental processes and to develop and continuously improve climate models. Anyone following the news will have seen that Typhoon Trami has had multiple impacts on Japan in the last hours. It also caused a delay to the start of the WCRP SPARC General Assembly, where 400 scientists are to discuss climate change, the atmosphere, and extreme weather. We are happy to report that everyone is safe and the conference has now begun (you can follow it on twitter @WCRP_SPARC). Our thoughts are with all those in Japan affected by the typhoon (Image: JMA).
