The Ocean and Climate Scholars Programme is an intensive, fully funded workshop examining our past, present and future climate, oceans interaction and our influence at global, regional and local scales. The programme will be held at NUI Galway, Ireland from 18th to 22nd September 2017 and is open to postgraduate students of ocean, climate and environment related sciences. This new paper in Nature Geoscience by Benjamin Santer and others analyses global-mean tropospheric temperatures from satellites and climate model simulations to examine whether warming rate differences over the satellite era can be explained by internal climate variability alone.
This training course aims to provide PhD students and early career researchers with the fundamentals of ocean-colour satellite data and their applications. Registration for the MathDACC School on Mathematics for Climate Change Detection and Attribution is now open. The school will take place from 24-29 September 2017 in Aussois, France. The deadline for registration is 21st of July 2017. See the website for more details.

The Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study (iLEAPS), a global research project of Future Earth, will hold its 5th Science Conference in Oxford, United Kingdom in September 2017. This paper by Sean Davis and others presents water vapour and ozone intercomparisons that were performed as part of the SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes and their Role in Climate) Reanalysis Intercomparison Project (S-RIP). The comparisons cover a range of timescales and evaluate both inter-reanalysis and observation-reanalysis differences. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) officially launched the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) during the WMO Executive Committee meeting #69 in Geneva, Switzerland. From mid-2017 to mid-2019, scientists and operational forecasting centers from various countries will work together to observe, model, and improve forecasts of the Arctic and Antarctic weather and climate systems. In Brief: WCRP Director David Carlson gave a keynote presentation "Urgent Climate Challenges - Research and Modeling" at the Research Dialogue of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meeting in Bonn last week. The WCRP Community also presented five posters, informing SBSTA of relevant research activities by the science community.
