The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) co-sponsored a workshop in Paris from 26 to 28 November 2025 that bought together leading experts from across the globe and from multiple disciplines to build consensus and address urgent questions related to high impact events, tipping points and their consequences. The Workshop took place the week before the IPCC first Lead Author Meeting (LAM1) of all Working Groups (1-5 December 2025) and aimed for a strong representation of Global South researchers and diverse perspectives, including authors selected to lead and contribute to relevant sections of the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) (link) and from the related WCRP Assessment on High-impact climate events, tipping points, and irreversible regional impacts assessment.
The three-day meeting evaluated and advanced our ability to assess the risk of Earth System high impact events, tipping points, and their consequences. It provided selected IPCC authors and Bureau members with an invaluable opportunity to exchange with a broad group of leading experts, to benefit from community insights into these complex questions and allowed scientific discussions, networking and bridge-building across IPCC Working Group domains.
The WCRP-IPCC workshop on "Earth system high impact events, tipping points and their consequences" took place in Paris, at Sorbonne Université - Campus Pierre et Marie Curie.
