17 June 2019 - WCRP Strategic Plan approved by all three WCRP Co-sponsors

All three of the WCRP Co-sponsors officially approve the WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2028 on or before 17 June 2019.


30 May 2019 - The draft Strategic Plan is updated in response to WCRP Co-sponsor comments

Minor comments from the WCRP Co-sponsors were responded to in the WCRP Strategic Plan and a final draft version was produced. As members of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee changed in 2019, this process was led by the new WCRP JSC Chair Detlef Stammer and Vice-chair Helen Cleugh, with full cooperation with the JSCs of both 2018 and 2019. 


11 December 2018 - WCRP/USGCRP/NASEM Town Hall at AGU

At the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2018 in Washington DC, WCRP hosted a town hall meeting together with the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to discuss international climate science in the next decade, including the WCRP Strategic Plan.


9 November 2018 - Final draft of Strategic Plan sent to WCRP Co-sponsors

The final draft of the WCRP Strategic Plan was sent to WCRP Co-sponsors for their approval. 


26 October 2018 - JSC call to approve the WCRP Strategic Plan

The JSC took all the comments from the public consultation and incorporated them into a new version of the Strategic Plan, also making responses to the comments publically available. On 26 October a teleconference was held to discuss the new version and all those present approved the Strategic Plan. Following the call, the approval of JSC members who were not on the call was obtained by email so that by 6 November all 18 members of the JSC (2018) had approved the WCRP Strategic Plan. 


31 August 2018 - Public consultation of draft WCRP Strategic Plan closed

There were 44 online and 10 emailed public comments received on the draft WCRP Strategic Plan from individuals, groups, and organizations worldwide. The WCRP Joint Scientific Committee Writing Coordinators will now address the comments and produce the final version of the Strategic Plan. The final version of the Strategic Plan will be released in December 2018.


11 June 2018 - Draft WCRP Strategic Plan open for public consultation

After extensive consultation with the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) and community leaders, the draft WCRP Strategic Plan is open for public comment. This is 10 days later than anticipated due to an extra round of JSC consultation, but the refinement of the document that resulted was well worth the extra time invested. The public consultation will run from 11 June to 31 August 2018


May-June 2018 - Refinement and finetuning

During May the WCRP writing team worked to include the outcomes of JSC-39 in the Strategic Plan. As the resulting document was very long and detailed, the Chair, Guy Brasseur, and Vice-chair, Amanda Lynch, of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) then took the main points of the plan and streamlined it into a shorter, crisper document. This new document was shared and discussed with the JSC writing team in a teleconference of 24 May 2018.


16-20 April 2018 - 39th Session of the Joint Scientific Committee, Nanjing, China

The WCRP Strategic Plan was discussed in detail at JSC-39. Breakout groups on the proposed Overarching Objectives, Emphases, and Imperatives, as well as on regional issues, facilitated discussion and led to a number of recommendations moving forward. These recommendations will now be embedded in the next version of the Strategic Plan. The timeframe for public consultation was agreed as: 1 June - 31 August 2018. You can find links to JSC-39 discussions attached to the main agenda of the meeting.


28 March 2018 - Conference Call with WCRP Strategic Plan Section Coordinators

The WCRP Strategic Plan Section Coordinators will address all comments from the community consultation by 5 April 2018 so that a new version of the Strategic Plan can be available before JSC-39 in Nanjing (16-20 April 2018). Some comments and the Plan, in general, will be discussed at that meeting.


23 March 2018 - WCRP Community Comments on the Plan Received

Comments from the WCRP Community were received and will now be considered by the WCRP Strategic Plan Section Coordinators. There will be a call on 28 March 2018 to discuss the way forward.


9 March 2018 - Draft Strategic Plan sent out to WCRP leaders for comment

The draft of the WCRP Strategic Plan produced at the Paris Writing Retreat was cleaned up and sent out to the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee and to the chairs and leaders of WCRP core projects, advisory councils, working groups, grand challenges, projects, and panels. The deadline for comments is 23 March 2018.


26-28 February 2018 - WCRP Strategic Plan Writing Retreat, IOC-UNESCO, Paris

The WCRP Strategic Plan Writing Retreat brought together the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee Chair, Co-chair and Officers and the Joint Planning Staff to discuss and write the draft Strategic Plan. It was very successful and at the end of the three days, a first full draft of the Strategic Plan was produced. There was also an opportunity to discuss the Strategic Plan and the future of WCRP with representatives from the WCRP Co-sponsors and the Chair of the WCRP Review Panel.


22 February 2018 - Conference Call with WCRP Strategic Plan Section Coordinators

Input to the WCRP Strategic Plan was solicited from leaders in the WCRP Community and brought together into draft text by the WCRP Strategic Plan Writing Coordinators. This call enabled general discussion on the content, where gaps were evident and how to proceed leading up to Paris.


17 January 2018 - Conference Call with WCRP Leaders 

In this call, the draft WCRP Strategic Plan outline was agreed and the WCRP Strategic Plan Writing Coordinators (Guy Brasseur, Amanda Lynch, Anny Cazenave, Mauricio M. Mata, and Martin Visbeck) were announced. The writing of the plan, involving all WCRP leaders (members of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee, Chairs, and Directors of all Councils, Projects, and Working Groups), where possible, then commenced with a deadline for a draft by mid-February. 


8 December 2017 - Strategic Plan Writing Retreat Dates Confirmed

A writing retreat where the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee Chair, Vice-Chair, and Officers worked on writing the WCRP Strategic Plan took place from 26-28 February 2018 at UNESCO-IOC in Paris. 


16 November 2017 - SWOT Survey Closed

The SWOT Survey closed, with 49 respondents.


7-8 November 2017 - Conference Calls with WCRP Leaders

Three Conference Calls were held in this two day period with the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee and with the Chairs and Directors of the WCRP Core Projects, CORDEX, Councils and Working Groups.


21 October 2017 - Organizational Meeting

An organizational meeting was held at WMO in Geneva to discuss strategic plan planning process. Present were Guy Brasseur (Chair WCRP Joint Scientific Committee), Amanda Lynch (Vice-Chair WCRP Joint Scientific Committee), Deon Terblanche (Acting Director WCRP, Director of Research WMO), Michel Rixen (Senior Scientific Officer, WCRP), Michael Sparrow (Senior Scientific Officer, WCRP) and Narelle van der Wel (Consultant, WCRP). The structure of the plan was discussed and the general way forward outlined.


26 September 2017 - SWOT Survey Open

The SWOT survey to guide the development of the WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2029 opened on 26 September 2018. It invited respondents to outline the strengths and weaknesses of WCRP and the opportunities and threats that the Programme faces in its future development. It also asked what WCRP Core Business should be, what high-level questions WCRP should address in the next 10 years, and what emerging questions in climate science should be considered.
