The World Climate Research Programme’s My Climate Risk Lighthouse Activity, together with Fundación Avina (as Secretariat of the BASE initiative) and Rede Clima, will co-host a hands-on workshop to address a critical and timely challenge: to develop actionable climate evidence that supports funding for loss and damage in wildfire-prone areas of the Amazon and Pantanal biomes. Set against the backdrop of COP30 in Brazil, the workshop brings together scientists, fire management experts, climate finance actors, and indigenous and local leaders to co-design a bottom-up process that merges physical climate science and local knowledge.
As the global community begins to operationalize the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD), significant gaps remain in access mechanisms, technical capacity, and the definition of acceptable climate evidence—especially for communities on the frontlines of climate-induced disasters. In this workshop, participants will work to align attribution studies, seasonal forecasts, and future climate projections with the lived experiences and adaptive practices of Amazonian and Pantanal communities to make a compelling case for funding. In the interest of achieving wider reach and by piloting a climate evidence process during the 2025 fire season, the workshop aims to produce replicable methodologies that unblock access to climate finance, strengthen wildfire response, and elevate locally led strategies into the global climate funding arena.
This initiative builds upon the BASE programme’s innovative grantmaking model—Fund, Learn, and Scale—and draws from My Climate Risk’s methodological expertise in generating place-based climate information. Key outcomes will include an advocacy strategy, practical tools for community engagement, and a foundation for a new, inclusive model of loss and damage evidence-building that reflects both science and social justice.
