Professor Amadou Thierno Gaye was appointed as a member of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) in 2023.

For more than twenty five years Amadou led the development of an atmospheric, climate and ocean research group at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, Senegal. With his group he investigated atmospheric processes and dynamics in the West African monsoon, water cycle and hydrology, atmosphere-ocean interaction including teleconnections, dynamics of the Eastern Atlantic boundary upwelling system, climate variability and changes, air pollution and also impacts of climate change on socio-economic sectors as agriculture, health, water resources.

He has also experience in policy-making as Director General of Research and Innovation at Senegal Ministry of Higher education, research and innovation. Amadou has contributed very strongly to training new generation of climate scientists in Senegal and Africa..) as main or co-supervisor of around forty PhD thesis and director of the main School of engineering in UCAD.

He has contributed as Lead Author in IPCC AR4 and was former GEWEX SSG member and SSG member of My Climate Risk Lighthouse Activity of WCRP. He is current Co-chair of the African initiative of Climate Research for Development.
