September, 2016

Over the next few months we intend to prepare a useful and accessible WCRP summary document.  We hope the document will serve three purposes: a brief summary of recent accomplishments and impact, a ‘review’ document to meet the needs of the up-coming International Council for Science (ICSU) review of WCRP, and a WCRP outlook for the next several years recognising present and future challenges especially as influenced by the Paris climate agreement.

We will build our document largely from existing materials: implementation plans by most of the core projects, key questions raised by most of the grand challenges, the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) outline just published, the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) Community document, the WCRP communication plan, etc.  We will not replace or negate any of the planning done by the core projects. We will attempt to incorporate key messages from all of these sources into an attractive and compelling package, emphasising - as you might expect - a strong continuing need for fundamental climate research, the growing momentum toward open access for data and research publications, key partnerships, building bridges toward climate services and the next generation.

JPS will produce a very rough first draft by end of September 2016, to show what we have and what we need.  We will use existing materials and ask for fresh contributions where needed.  We will open and share that initial document widely for review and comment.  We would like to produce a friendly document for internal and external purposes. We look forward to your contributions and cooperation.
