A three-day, in-person hackathon analyzing how the new generation of CMIP7 models represents historical trends and multidecadal variability, is organized by the CLIVAR CEMT-MV research foci, from 6 to 8 January 2027. The hackathon will be held at three hubs (Boulder, Taipei and Tokyo) over the same three days. It will consist of some lectures and tutorials on CMIP data analysis with the majority of the time spent hacking.
CMIP7 offers a new opportunity to confront Earth system models with observations over an extended historical period with realistic external forcings. This hackathon will analyze CMIP7 simulations that are available in early 2027, examining how well this new generation of models with updated forcings represents historical trends and multidecadal variability.
The aim is to understand the relative roles of forced change and internally generated variability in historical trends, identify the physical processes involved, and assess the ability of CMIP models to reproduce them. The ultimate goal is to spur research towards focused publications ahead of the IPCC AR7 deadline (March 15, 2027).
Participation is by application, and applications are due October 24th, 2026 and notification will be received in late October / early November. The hackathon is open to all career stages.
