Sarah HOLMES

Sarah Holmes is a climate scientist with a background spanning international climate research, climate services, and science communication. She started her career with a PhD in marine climate science from the University of Exeter, specifically using clams as climate recorders (ask her, she loves talking about it). From there, she joined the UK Met Office's International Applied Science and Services team, where she led major climate risk projects for UK Government and designed and delivered capacity-building programmes for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services across Africa and South and Southeast Asia, supporting NMHSs to better understand and communicate climate information in their regions. A secondment to the UK Climate Change Committee saw her author the Shipping chapter of the 2023 Progress Report to Parliament, with recommendations since reflected in national policy including the 7th Carbon Budget. Most recently, she was seconded as an Expert Scientist to the WMO Secretariat in Geneva, working on modernising WMO's State of the Climate reporting and supporting high-level science-policy outputs.

 

At the WCRP Secretariat, Sarah will provide programmatic and communications support to key WCRP activities, including the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Core Project and the Safe Landing Climates and My Climate Risk Lighthouse Activities.

 

Outside of work, Sarah can usually be found outdoors: trail running, hiking, biking, swimming, paragliding, or surfing.
