René GARREAUD

René Garreaud is a Full Professor of the Department of Geophysics, University of Chile, and Deputy Director of the Center sof Excellence for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2). He was president of the Chilean Higher Council of Sciences (FONDECYT 2013) and was elected as a member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences in 2019. He has been invited as a Research Fellow to Yale University (2016) and the University of California, San Diego (2024), USA, and actively participates in national and international scientific initiatives.
His academic training includes a doctorate in Meteorology obtained in 2000 at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA, a degree in Civil engineering, and a Master of Science from the University of Chile (1993).
Prof. Garreaud's expertise is in climate dynamics, climate change, and synoptic meteorology, focusing on South America. His work is extensive, with over 180 publications in specialized international journals, ranking in the top 2% of the most productive researchers in the world. His dedication to the field extends to training new scientists, supervising ten post-doctoral students, 20 Master students, and three doctoral students. He also imparts his knowledge by teaching various climate, meteorology, and physics courses for undergraduate and graduate students at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, University of Chile.
