WCRP OSC 2023 - Kigali Declaration: Climate Science for a Sustainable Future for All

Read the Kigali Declaration here.

The Kigali Declaration, one of the biggest outcomes of the WCRP Open Science Conference 2023, calls for immediate climate action, amplification of the relevance and benefits of climate research to society, and increased accessible and equitable investments towards climate mitigation.

With 734 signatories, majority of whom were conference participants, the Declaration is the collective voice of the participants of the Open Science Conference. The aim of the conference was to discuss the present state and the future evolution of climate science, and the actions urgently required to mitigate against and adapt to climate change. The participants acknowledged that human-induced climate change and other human impacts on the environment are among the major reasons behind the polycrises and rising inequalities currently faced by the world.

Advancing Climate Science for a Sustainable Future

The 2nd Open Science Conference of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) took place in Kigali, Rwanda,  at the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC), from 23 to 27 October 2023, hosted by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) on behalf of the Government of Rwanda. Meeting in the heart of the African continent has promoted strong engagement with research communities, stakeholders and practitioners from Rwanda and the broader African region.

This once-in-a-decade conference brought together the climate, environment, and related communities to discuss the latest developments in climate science and explore the transformative actions urgently needed to ensure a sustainable future. Taking place at a critical moment in Earth’s history, the outcome of all conference sessions will culminate with the “Kigali Declaration” – a conference statement that will be submitted to the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) taking place in the United Arab Emirates immediately after the Conference.

The Conference  has highlighted advances and challenges in research on the coupled Earth System. Major themes across the conference included advances in climate research, human interactions with climate, and co-produced climate services and solutions. The conference included over 40 oral and poster sessions, as well as high-level Dome Plenary Sessions every morning.
