Valery Detemmerman has been hired on contract to the IOC to coordinate the organization of the WCRP 2023 Open Science Conference. Most recently she assisted in the organization of the Ocean Obs19 Conference. From 2014 to 2016 she was Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office in Qingdao, China. For the previous 27 years she was a Scientific Officer at the WCRP Secretariat in Geneva where she was involved with many major WCRP projects, including CLIVAR, TOGA, and WOCE, as well as assisting in the organization of the previous WCRP Open Science Conference in Denver, CO, USA in 2011. Before moving to Geneva, she spent four years in Washington DC at the National Science Foundation and NOAA and six years at RSMAS, University of Miami, where she earned an MS in Physical Oceanography and carried out several Arctic expeditions for the Tritium Lab. Valery has a BS in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Valery splits her time between Crans-Montana in the Swiss Alps and Barcelona. She enjoys swimming and hiking and is an avid reader.
