Professor Cristiana Stan was appointed as a member of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) in 2023. Cristiana is also the Co-chair of the MJO and Teleconnections subproject of the WWRP/WCRP/S2S Prediction Project.

Cristiana holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Master of Science in Atmospheric Physics from University of Bucharest. She received her Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University for her theoretical work in the field of geophysical fluid dynamics. Her research interests center on climate modeling with a focus on the large-scale dynamics and predictability of tropical and midlatitude variability. With her group, Cristiana conducts research on topics addressing the role of cloud representation in modeling the tropical cyclone activity, monsoon circulations, Madden-Julian Oscillation, and ENSO under current conditions and future climate change scenarios, tropical-extratropical teleconnections on intraseasonal time scale, and subseasonal-to-seasonal variability of the extratropics. She is also involved in the development of ML/AI methods for climate data analysis.

Cristiana was previously a member of the U.S. CLIVAR Panel on Prediction, Predictability and Applications Interface (PPAI) and a Program Manager in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Earth and Environmental System Modeling (EESM) program under an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment.
