Dr. Ken Takahashi was appointed as a member of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) in 2019. He was previously a member of the CLIVAR Pacific Region Panel and of the WCRP CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group.
Ken has a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Washington, Seattle, specializing in large-scale tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere processes. As a postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University/NOAA GFDL, he worked on the physics of global climate change. Back in his native Peru, his research was focused on the physics of El Niño, its regional impacts and its prediction. As a member of the Peruvian National Commission for El Niño Study, he played a key role in establishing operational procedures, as well as in informing stakeholders, decision makers and general population with respect to the scientific issues.
Ken is currently the Director of the Peruvian National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (SENAMHI). He is a Permanent Representative of Peru with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and an interim member of the WMO Executive Council. He is also a member of the Tropical Pacific Observing System 2020 (TPOS 2020) Steering Committee, in which he co-chairs the Eastern Pacific Task Team.
