Publication of the OceanObs'09 Conference Proceedings 17.02.2012
The production of the first volume of the OceanObs'09 Conference Proceedings is now completed. This volume includes the conference Plenary Papers that were based on the Community White Papers. The Community White Papers provided community input ahead of the meeting addressing specific areas of the ocean observing and information system. The Plenary Papers were the essential mechanism for merging this information into a broader community consensus, and to building a coherent vision.... look at the on-line final version
Open Discussion on the Future CLIVAR: Town Hall Meeting at the USA Ocean Sciences 2012 13.02.2012
International CLIVAR seeks to identify major emerging climate science questions and to facilitate international coordination, cooperation and capacity building to address these issues. CLIVAR of the future will be more cross-disciplinary and will need to build the application of CLIVAR/ocean science to societal needs. This town hall meeting will provide an opportunity to explore new directions for CLIVAR, with a focus on the role of the oceans in climate and on climate of the oceans. SPARC International Project Office Now in ETH Zurich 03.02.2012
The international project for atmospheric and climate research SPARC (Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate) relocated its coordination centre from Canada to Switzerland. On 7 February 2012, SPARC will celebrate the inauguration of its new office at ETH Zurich and its 20th anniversary. SPARC was founded in 1992 and to date has significantly contributed to the knowledge of chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere as well as helped to improve global prediction models for ozone and climate.... read more

Barbara Ryan, currently Director of WMO Space Programme, will succeed Jose Achache
as the Director of the GEO Secretariat. J. Achache was instrumental for the formation of GEO and the establishment of the Global Earth Observation System of System (GEOSS) over the last six years. WCRP wishes him well on his future endeavours and welcomes B. Ryan in her new position.
Introducing the new WCRP Modelling and Data Advisory Councils 20.01.2012
The Joint Scientific Committee of WCRP, at its Extraordinary-JSC meeting in October 2011 in Boulder, USA, confirmed the establishment of a WCRP Modeling Advisory Council (WMAC) and a Data Advisory Council (WDAC) to strengthen the coordination and synergies between the various modeling and data analysis efforts across the program respectively. Important Dates for the 2nd Symposium on Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans 28.11.2011
The early registration and abstract submission deadline for the Second International Symposium on “Effects of climate change on the world's oceans” is December 15, 2011. The main event is part of the official programme of the World Expo-2012 in Yeosu, Korea. The 5-day scientific programme is embedded in a variety of interesting concurrent workshops happening before and after the symposium.
La Plata Basin Regional Hydroclimate Project: a Joint GEWEX/CLIVAR Initiative 25.11.2011
CLIVAR/VAMOS and GEWEX/GHP have recognized the La Plata Basin in southern South America as a system sensitive to climate variability and change, with potential consequences for water resources and agricultural activities of the region. Accordingly, both CLIVAR and GEWEX have endorsed the La Plata Basin Regional Hydroclimate Project (LPB) and its objectives. The latest issue of CLIVAR Exchanges Newsletter present a selection of articles focused on LPB research.

International Symposium to Focus on Ozone Layer and Climate Change 27.10.2011
An international conference, “2011 IYC Symposium on Stratospheric Ozone and Climate Change,” will be in Washington DC, USA, Nov. 7-10. World Meteorological Day 2011: Climate for you 02.03.2011
Each year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 189 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System. This year, the theme is “Climate for you”.
Opportunities and Risks for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services 28.02.2011
The directors of IHDP and DIVERSITAS are the co-authors of an article in Science magazine that calls for a rethink of the link between science and society in guiding the establishment of the new biodiversity and ecosystem services assessment IPBES. IPBES is designed to provide an Intergovernmental Platform for assessing biodiversity and ecosystems similar to IPCC for climate change. The authors of the article argue that IPBES should, in addition, investigate the consequences of specific policies implemented by governing bodies, and utilize scientific knowledge to inform and shape policy decisions at multiple levels.... read the article

Welcome Ms. Teresa Alcober new member of WCRP/JPS 01.09.2010
The WCRP Joint Planning Staff welcomes Teresa Alcober, our new WCRP Administrative Assistant. Teresa joined WCRP on September 1st, taking up the position left vacant by Ms. Ann Alturo, who retired last June. Teresa has an extensive administrative experience at WMO since she joined the Technical Cooperation Department in 1988. Before WCRP she worked with several WMO departments including the Atmospheric Research and Environment Programme.

Recent Natural Disasters in the News 20.08.2010
In an interview recently published in ClimateWire, Dr. Ghassem Asrar, WCRP Director, points to a combination of higher than usual Atlantic Ocean temperatures together with an abnormal upper-atmosphere airflow, caused by La Nina, as the main driver of the record drought in Russia and the extreme flooding in South Asia. Outcome of the WCRP workshop on Modelling Monsoon Intraseasonal Variability 2.8.2010
The WCRP/CLIVAR Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel, in conjunction with the WWRP-THORPEX/WCRP Year of Tropical Convection MJO Task Force, held a Workshop on Modelling Monsoon Intraseasonal Variability (ISV) in June 2010 at the Asian Pacific Climate Center in Busan, Korea. The workshop assessed the current capability to predict and simulate ISV, developed a process-oriented diagnostics/metrics that target the underlying physical mechanisms of the ISV, and prioritized the future research needs and directions to improve simulation and prediction of ISV. Farewell to Ann Alturo 30.6.2010
The JPS for WCRP says farewell to Ann Alturo, historically known as Ann Salini, as she retires officially on 1 July 2010. Ann has served in the WCRP secretariat since 2000, but actually joined WMO in 1977. Her professional expertise is well-known to the wide WCRP community but certainly the JPS will also miss her friendship. We hope that she will come and visit us often, for this is farewell and not goodbye.

The 31st session of the Joint Scientific Committee for WCRP took place in Antalya, Turkey, on 15-19 February 2010. The final report of the meeting has now been published and is available on-line.
Earth System Visioning Open Forum 17.6.2010
The International Council for Science (ICSU), in cooperation with the International Social Science Council (ISSC), will host in Paris an Open Forum on 22 June 2010. The Forum will explore how best to organize global research efforts in order to address the Grand Challenges in Global Sustainability Research. For those who are not able to attend the Open Forum, comments on the document can be posted on the visioning webpage.
Media Reporting of Climate Change Study 7.6.2010
As part of the ESSP session at the Global Media Forum, this study aims to understand how climate science is transmitted through the media and how this transmission influences policy. In particular, we are interested in studying the period (November 2009 - February 2010) encompassing the COP-15 in Copenhagen, and the journalistic coverage of the claims of IPCC errors and other issues of research misconduct.
